Job Description
Position Summary
This position is responsible for representing Thermo Fisher Scientific at the U.K. Government on public policy issues that advance the company mission. The person will work out of the London area, UK, and report to the Senior Director of EMEA Government Relations in Brussels, Belgium.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Government Relations and Public Affairs in the U.K., ensuring Thermo Fisher’s interests are effectively represented.
- Collaborate closely with the Senior Director EMEA Government Relations and Public Affairs to develop and implement a Government Relations strategy for the U.K.
- Work with Thermo Fisher colleagues to identify priority issues and develop company positions on relevant public policy proposals.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with public policy makers, opinion leaders, academia, industry leaders, and research institutions to support business objectives.
- Help facilitate connections for senior Thermo Fisher employees with external stakeholders, including No 10, Government Ministers, Civil Servants, Parliamentarians, Political Advisers.
- Ensure effective representation of Thermo Fisher on various national-level working groups at trade associations and continuously assess the coverage of Thermo Fisher’s interests.
- Maintain and communicate an effective monitoring system for major national policy/legislative developments and initiatives impacting Thermo Fisher’s U.K. operations.
- Provide counsel on government policy issues and opportunities to Thermo Fisher’s UK team.
- Develop briefings and UK position statements highlighting policy issues to support the company’s mission.
Minimum Requirements/Qualifications
- Significant experience in government and public affairs, including delivering engagement programs.
- A strong network of key collaborators within the UK policy and political landscape, with a solid grasp of the UK political and Parliamentary process.
- Excellent grasp of key public policy themes and issues crafting the UK, preferably with knowledge of the life sciences sector.
- Shown capability to develop and implement sophisticated strategic plans that align with organizational goals.
- High proficiency in using communication channels to craft the environment and build/protect organisational reputation.
- Shown experience providing strategic counsel to senior business leaders.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to develop public policy positions.
- Reputation for uncompromising integrity.
- Self-motivated with a proactive approach.
- Intellectually curious and adaptable to changing priorities.
- Experience collaborating in a matrix organization with multiple internal collaborators.
Non-Negotiable Hiring Criteria
- College degree required.
- At least 10 years of growing experience in a government relations position.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
