Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Laboratory Technologist IV licensed by the NYS Department of Education, Office of the Professions. They are qualified, once they undergo training and competency, to work in the various departments of the Laboratory. A clinical laboratory technologist embodies the area of practice defined in Article 165 of NYS Education Law and Tile 10 of NYS Public Health Law. Moreover, the technologists must have a competency assessment signed off by the Department Supervisor or Designee to work.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Laboratory Technologists IV, are responsible for:

  • Specializes in one or more of the laboratory’s specialties
  • Perform clinical laboratory procedures and examinations and other test and procedures conducted by the Chemistry and Hematology Laboratories.
  • Performing procedures – Accessioning, Specimen Testing, Quality Control, and Proficiency Testing
  • Reporting and Documentation of Results
  • Adhere to Safety Protocols
  • Performing examinations
  • All Related Duties as Outlined in Laboratory SOP
  • Participate in -Performance Improvement Activities
  • Meet all compliance •standards/requirements such as annual physical evaluation/assessment, Multi-Star Training, Fire Drill participation, etc.
  • Be responsible for enhancing personal and professional development through attendance at Network training classes.
  • Flexibility in handling additional task to meet TAT. departmental, and regulatory compliance such as CAP, DOH, JCHO
  • Possess excellent dexterity and analytic skills
  • Ability to plan and organize technical work, manage workload, operate technical instruments and equipment and input data.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs regular accessioning tests and procedures on blood, urine, blood fluids, and body fluids to assist in diagnoses and treatment on specimens submitted to the lab (performs bench work)
  • Monitor and data entry and verify patient results
  • Reviews in-house and reference laboratory incomplete worklist
  • Reviews abnormal/critical result queue
  • Enters raw data from instruments into computer systems to identify final results
  • Record results on report forms and laboratory reports (record books, electronic forms/books)
  • Able to process specimens.
  • Able to prepare and examine slides and/or smears
  • Ensures operation of analyzers and other instruments with calibration and quality controls; performs preventive maintenance following manufacturer’s instructions; and troubleshoot instrument issues
  • Uphold the quality control program; as well as, participate in the quality assurance program
  • Reviews when the quality control program is performed by staff
  • Participates on an individual and as Clinical laboratory technologist in ALL governmental proficiency test programs
  • Adheres to ALL Laboratory and Hospital policies and procedures
  • Organizes workflow to facilitate completion of assigned tasks
  • Responds to STAT and routine requests within the expected turnaround time

Minimum Qualifications

1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.

For Appointment to Levels IV and V

1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.

Special Notes:

Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State.

Candidates that are solely licensed or issued permits to practice as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in a laboratory discipline/specialty appropriate to their license or permit. Candidates that are licensed or hold permits to practice as clinical laboratory technologists may be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in all laboratory disciplines/specialties.
