This position requires the expertise of a current or former first responder (police, fire, emergency medical services) professional to support the Center for Behavioral Emergency and Addiction Research (CBEAR) and the Houston Emergency Opioid Engagement System. This position will develop and implement peer support and counseling programming for first responders, including a peer referral program for first responders across Texas, as well as developing unique continuing education programs. The Heroes Helpline is a 24/7 telephonic support line available to any Texas first responder experiencing mental health or substance use concerns. Educational efforts include developing curriculum to improve first responders understanding of mental health and substance use, and delivering the curriculum to the target population via in-person training sessions and self-paced online modules.

Provides professional level skills in the teaching, counseling, training, and research aspects of health education programs in the community and for the institution.

Position Summary:

Provides professional level skills in the teaching, counseling, training, and research aspects of health education programs in the community and for the institution.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Contacts or may be contacted by various community agencies and participants for the planning and development of specialized educational programs.
2. Coordinates, promotes, and provides administrative assistance to multi-disciplinary programs which combine institutional interests/developments with community needs.
3. Prepares, coordinates, organizes, schedules and conducts special events, classes, workshops, and/or training programs for health education topics.
4. Provides educational training and research functions pertaining to various aspects of health education programs.
5. May maintain and organize administrative records and details of contact.
6. Coordinates and promotes multidisciplinary programs, establishes policies, provides administrative assistance, and coordinates activities with various standing committees in the Health Science Center.
7. Prepares, coordinates, organizes, schedules and conducts special events, classes, workshops, and/or training programs for health education topics.
8. Provides information, referral, and consultation to faculty, staff, students, employees of other universities and organizations, and private individuals on community health education programs.
9. Assists in the writing, editing, and reviewing of various publications, newsletters, and catalogs.
10. Maintains and organizes administrative records of participants in the health education programs, workshops, activities, etc. and provides details of contact as needed.
11. May perform other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or health related field.

Minimum Experience:

Three years of experience working with community agencies and health related institutions. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
