Position Summary

The EMS Professional Development Specialist acts as a facilitator of learning, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, and a partner for practice transition to improve healthcare outcomes. Facilitates collaborative partnership and promotes evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives. Meets the standards in accordance with established hospital, State, and Federal standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Under General supervision:

  • Responsible for organizing, coordinating, and providing oversight of the field training process for new EMS department staff EMTs and paramedics.
  • Coordinates completion of initial skills validations for EMT and paramedic staff. Completes corresponding paperwork and forwards to EMS Quality Coordinator.
  • Coordinates DPH approved regular continuing education offerings for staff and sponsored services.
  • Coordinates educational offerings based on areas for improvement identified by the EMS Quality Coordinator.
  • Represents the Department of EMS in planning and implementation of interdisciplinary educational programs
  • Provide initial training for department preceptors and field training officers.
  • Provides written and verbal feedback to EMS Manager on new hires progress, suggestions, and/or changes needed in the process.
  • Active with the New Hire Committee reviewing applications and interviews potential new employees.
  • Makes operational and training suggestions to EMS leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Current Connecticut license as a paramedic, with a minimum two years full time experience.
  • CT EMS-Instructor, BLS, ACLS, and PALS or PEPP certifications required
  • A valid Connecticut driver’s license
  • Excellent human relations skills, leadership ability, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree
    • Prior experience as an instructor
    • Critical Care Paramedic experience
    • Comfortable with developing distance learning for large and small groups
    • Commercial EMS experience at the paramedic level
    • NRP, FP-C, TCCC
  • Experience in EMS instruction
