Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting After the 2006 July War, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) initiated its Country Programme in Lebanon, responding to emerging issues through housing reconstruction, shelter provision and upgrading basic services, while laying the foundation for long-term sustainable solutions by means of urban profiling (including neighbourhood profiling) and other research, as well as urban policy analyses. UN-Habitat Lebanon has been working effectively with partners and urban planning actors at the community, national and international levels for the past 15 years to develop and implement programmes and interventions that contribute to the achievement of the targets of Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. The intern will be working with the unit’s technical team and directly reporting to the Urban Planning & Design Unit (UPDU) manager. Responsibilities Assists in data and information acquisition processes required by the project(s) through desk and field research as well as engagement with project stakeholder. Assists in the analysis of collected data under the supervision of the project(s) coordinator(s). Prepares detailed Bill of Quantities (BoQs), technical drawings, and specifications based on preliminary site assessments and national and international engineering practices, etc. Contributes to the development of engineering designs. Contributes to the implementation of feasibility analyses including cost estimates for individual project components. Joins the UPDU team field visits, performs site inspections as requested and submits field visit reports. Supports the UPDU in the daily implementation of engineering projects. Attends meetings and prepares meeting minutes. Assists in the assessment of permitting requirements. Supports the preparation and review of Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) of specific projects and assists external consultants in the preparation of environmental assessments. Follows up on irrigation water/treated wastewater quality testing, and reports to the project coordinator. Assists in reviewing reports on solid waste management, including analyses, strategies, cost recovery plans, and monitoring and evaluation frameworks. Contributes to the development of clear and objective selection criteria for evaluating solid waste pilot project proposals. Follows-up with implementing partners/contractors on a daily basis, as requested by the project coordinator(s). Supports in any task required to ensure the programme’s sustainability and growth including research, and assistance in resource mobilization efforts as needed.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Currently enrolled or received a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the field of Civil and/or Environmental Engineering (or equivalent) is required. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
