Job Description

The VCE Field Marketing and Communications Coordinator position is responsible for marketing and telling the impactful story of Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) to local, state, national, and international audiences by writing articles and contributing to the Virginia Tech News, social media, websites, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and Virginia Tech publications, and other outlets.

Working collaboratively with CALS Communications and Marketing and VCE District Director(s), this person will produce and supply content to be used on the web and social media channels to market, communicate, and highlight activities across a portion of the commonwealth and effectively market and pitch those stories to the media. This person will assist with collecting social media content for the relevant VCE channels as well as gather engaging imagery and video content for their portion of Virginia.

This position will be an ambassador for CALS Communications and Marketing in the field, including incorporating and representing the VCE brand across channels and created materials. This position will also coordinate with Virginia Tech’s marketing specialists for best practices. Similarly, the VCE Field Marketing and Communications Coordinator will find and report on stories that show the breadth and impact of programs and events created by Virginia Cooperative Extension to better market VCE to its current and potential stakeholders.

The communicator will collaborate with the CALS Communications and Marketing team to ensure a steady stream of content is being provided for web and social media updates. This person will also collaborate with state-wide partners and project sponsors to support outreach and dissemination of project deliverables and outputs.

This position will report to the director of CALS Communications and Marketing and associated VCE district director(s). This position is based in the VCE Newport News unit with responsibilities across the Southeast region of the state, and works with Extension personnel in the Southeast and Northeast Districts.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience working in communications, public relations, journalism or related field
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent relevant experience, in communications, public relations, and/or journalism
  • Experience marketing programs and events to a diverse audience
  • Experience writing and producing public-facing content
  • Basic photo and video editing experience
  • Experience producing and editing digital content including engaging photos and videos
  • Experience leading training sessions on a variety of topics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with the media to get stories before a wider audience
  • Experience collaborating with a larger communications team to ensure messages are reiterated, carried across various channels, and uniform across a large landscape
  • Working knowledge of Virginia Cooperative Extension
