JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Automation Engineer is responsible for improving workforce productivity, consistency, and quality by anticipating and eliminating potential delays through planning, scheduling, and coordination of process, maintenance, calibration resources, parts, materials, equipment, or control system access.

This position is responsible for the installation, modification, and upgrade of automation systems, ensuring that all systems are operating correctly. In addition, this position is responsible for developing and designing the concept, selecting and programming controllers, ensuring the proper communication between different automation system components, simulating, installing, testing, and managing electrical or mechanical automation components, and finally monitoring and troubleshooting the automation processes on an ongoing basis.

PRINCIPAL ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead/participate in the design, integration, implementation, testing, commissioning, and evaluation of new and existing automation systems.
  • Manage automation projects and other resources.
  • Simulate and test automated systems, equipment, or processes.
  • Design, engineer, test, and troubleshoot control systems.
  • Lead/participate in problem-solving activities; engineer and implement solutions
  • Interact with internal staff and shop floor personnel, as needed
  • Maintain and enhance system documentation.
  • Interface with management, other engineers, and teams.
  • Streamline operations for efficiency, cost saving, safety, and reliability.
  • Maintain technical project files.
  • Assist with the management of budget, expenses, and P&L responsibilities
  • Develop and manage automation capital projects
  • Manage special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in automation, process control, or engineering (Computer, Electrical, or Mechanical) required; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in automation troubleshooting and programming.
  • Minimum of 12 years designing, installing, and troubleshooting complex automation systems as well as leading automation projects, preferably in Biotech/Pharma Process.
  • Experience identifying new opportunities for automation within the manufacturing process.
  • Experience simulating and testing these processes or equipment to ensure they function as desired.
  • Experience writing reports for senior colleagues outlining new concepts, testing outcomes, and ongoing efficiency.
  • Experience developing and maintaining clear and accurate documentation of automation equipment or processes.
  • Experience in training staff where necessary, typically after implementing new processes or equipment, or making changes to existing ones.
  • Experience working on the design of plant systems such as Purified Water, HVAC, Steam, Compressed air, and Chilled water systems in addition to equipment such as bioreactors, mixers, and centrifugal pumps.
  • Experience using CMMS system (Maximo, Blue Mountain RAM, etc.).

Preferred:

  • EIT or PE highly desirable.
  • FDA/GMP knowledge is highly desirable.
  • Experience on the following control systems preferred – GE iFIX SCADA, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley PLCs, Siemens PLCs, Step 7 or greater, OSIsoft PI Data Historian, and Andover Continuum BMS (building management system).
  • Experience managing a project team preferred.
  • Equivalent education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.

COMPENSATION RANGE:

$124,320 - $170,940, based on experience
