About the team
The Data Engineering team is responsible for making the vast amounts of data at Fitbit accessible to teams across the organization. We are also responsible for supporting the compute layer on top of the data which enables clients of the platform to build features and perform analysis on that data.
We spend our time working with internal clients like product managers, data scientists, data analysts and other engineers to understand their data needs as well as the teams that own the data.
Currently we leverage a lot of open source technology like Spark, Hive, Presto, Sqoop, Kafka and more. However, we also believe that Fitbit has a lot of unique problems that require us to think creatively outside of what the open source world can provide.
What will you do?
Transform health and fitness data (both batch and near-real-time) from a raw state into highly actionable and meaningful insights
Build rich visualizations (dashboards and reports) leveraging our extremely large data set to inform business and operational decisions
Become a subject matter expert in our engineering efforts around Fitbit devices, including firmware, pairing, syncing, etc.
Analyze complex data sets to help understand how best to optimize the complex communication processes underpinning Fitbit devices
Give guidance on experimental design for A/B testing and analyze results for statistical relevance
Evangelize the use of data tools and best practices and ensure stakeholders’ analytic needs are being met
Our ideal Data Analyst will have expertise in most (but preferably all) of these skills:
3-5 years of experience in a data-driven environment designing and building metrics-focused deliverables, ideally in a technical, consumer-facing and/or web-based business.
You’re enthusiastic and detail-oriented about producing high-quality data and analytics, often with requirements that are open-ended
You have a high degree of comfort in leveraging SQL to manipulate data
You have experience with at least one analytic reporting platform (Tableau, MicroStrategy, etc.) or data visualization libraries (ggplot, Highcharts, D3.js, etc.)
You have strong software development skills in one or more programming languages (Python, Java, etc.)
You have working knowledge of ETL and data warehousing concepts
You have exceptional communication skills and can manage stakeholder priorities directly
Experience with distributed analytic processing technologies (Hadoop, Hive, Pig, Presto, MapReduce, Kafka, Spark, etc)
Industry experience in building a consumer-facing product as a software engineer and/or thinking about telemetry from IoT and/or mobile devices
