You’ll be reporting to the Visitor Operations & Experiences Manager, joining the vibrant Visitor Experience and Welcome Team who work across the 3 National Trust properties in York. You'll be based at Treasurer's House forming part of the property team working closely with the Collections and House Officer, Assistant Welcome Manager, Assistant Food and Beverage Manager, Facilities Manager and Business Services Coordinator.
Tucked behind the Minster, Treasurer's House is not as it first appears. In 1897 it was bought by Frank Green, the grandson of a wealthy industrialist, and by 1900 he had transformed it at great speed into an elaborately decorated town house, ready for the visit of Edward VII. The eclectic show home you see today, is host to award winning tours during the main season, delivered by an excellent team of volunteers. From November, the house is tastefully decorated for Christmas, highlighting more stories from those who have shaped and inspired Treasurer's House to reflect what it is today. This gem of a historic property also boasts a small but perfectly formed award-winning city garden, which is free for the public to enjoy. Sit among the muted planting palette taking in the stone statues and plane tree avenue. The perfect spot away from the hustle of the city.
When at Goddards, take time exploring the garden ‘rooms’ of the former home of the Terry family (think Chocolate Orange). Discover fragrant borders, wildlife areas, vegetable garden and the glasshouse. Soak up the sunshine on the terrace or on a garden bench enjoying the view with your takeaway refreshments.
The Terry factory clock tower can be seen from the paddock orchard overlooking the racecourse linking the chocolate heritage of York and the Terry family from their factory to their home.
As Visitor Experience Officer for Treasurer's and Goddards, you'll be focussing on providing an excellent experience for all.
From managing the House and Outdoor Experience Volunteers across the two properties, you'll ensure they have a rewarding and all round great experience when volunteering with us, by listening and evolving the volunteer offer where possible. You'll lead on keeping the volunteer records up to date using the YourVolunteering database, recruitment, induction and training of new volunteers, organising and managing volunteer rotas and creating opportunities for volunteers to socialise and engage.
For visitors you'll use your creative flair and keen eye for detail to plan, prepare and deliver the popular Christmas experience at Treasurer's in collaboration with key members of the property team and the strong team of volunteer elves; bringing history and Christmas tradition together to provide an excellent experience for all visitors. You'll create fun and engaging family trails for both properties and using audience insight and data, ensure our tour and talks offers are meeting visitor needs and maintain the high standards of delivery these properties have become known for.
Playing your part as one of the Duty Management Team, you’ll open up the properties, ensuring everything is safe, presentable and good to go, ahead of opening. You’ll brief the teams on the day, so they’re fully up to speed with key information and be on hand to help and support where needed. As well as taking responsibility for looking after the building, you’ll also ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable visit when with us. As a first aider and fire marshal (training provided) you’ll respond appropriately to any calls and follow key policies and procedures to ensure everyone is safe and looked after when in our gardens and buildings.
Your role will be key in ensuring staff, volunteers and visitors are well communicated with so everyone knows what's happening and when.
