WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Guadalcanal Program Manager directs and oversees all aspects of the Conservancy’s protection, science, stewardship and community relations in Guadalcanal Province, Solomon Islands. They serve as the principle contact to Guadalcanal Provincial Government, the Guadalcanal Council of Chiefs, church groups, civil society, private sector and other conservation organizations in Guadalcanal Province. The Guadalcanal Program Manager will be based in Honiara and reports to the Solomon Islands Deputy Director. This is a fixed term position that ends in December 2026. The position may be extended depending on funding and program needs.

The Guadalcanal Program Manager establishes the Conservancy as a major conservation partner in Guadalcanal Province and works with multiple partners to facilitate the Guadalcanal Ridges to Reefs Conservation Planning project. They define conservation priorities and long-term conservation strategies, build strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field and develop key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve technical issues and ensure best practices. They engage local communities, including women, youth and other marginalised groups to gain support for conservation efforts and negotiate innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities. They are familiar with marine and terrestrial conservation practices, as well as the environmental and social issues that face communities in Solomon Islands. The Guadalcanal Program Manager is experienced in managing diverse teams of stakeholders, scientists and conservationists, and provides training and mentoring to groups; both in a classroom and practical settings. They actively mentor local conservation groups to build their technical and management expertise and is skilled at building government relations.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • Focal geography for this position is Guadalcanal Province, Solomon Islands.
  • Works within the Solomon Islands Conservation Management Team to progress the Conservancy’s Solomon Islands Strategic Plan.
  • Design, manage, and implement the Guadalcanal Ridges to Reef project, including work planning and budgeting.
  • Assist as needed to raise public and private funds to meet program needs.
  • Manage a diverse project team to deliver the Ridges to Reef project in Guadalcanal Province, including:
    • Facilitating Guadalcanal Ridges to Reef participatory workshops, effectively bringing together the views and priorities of a broad range of diverse stakeholders.
    • Work with the Solomon Islands Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning Officer to collect, manage, analyse, and present data to evaluate and demonstrate conservation impact, and communicate to key stakeholders through oral and written methods.
    • Conduct training of staff and partners in workshop facilitation, environmental management, and conservation planning techniques.
    • Build strategic long-term partnerships through regular communication with Solomon Islands Government, Guadalcanal Provincial Government, relevant landowners, and other national and international parties to accomplish program goals.
    • Manage and negotiate any disputes on customary lands at or around project sites.
    • Ensure all Guadalcanal Ridges to Reef project work follows the Solomon Islands Gender Equity and Social Inclusion Strategy by actively engaging women, youth and other marginalised groups in conservation decision-making and implementation.
  • Builds cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Travel approximately 30% of their time.
  • Frequently make independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Bachelor of Science/Arts degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
  • Experience negotiating

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • 5-7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions.
  • Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives or related field.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English, Solomon Islands Pijin, and other relevant local languages.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
  • Politically savvy.
