Position Summary:


Hershey’s Digital Innovation Lab is looking for a creative, curious and technically-oriented Manager to advance Hershey’s horizon on Digital Capabilities that will drive growth and efficiency. This Manager’s focus is primarily in three areas: 1) development and execution of the lab’s long term strategic projects run through the Pennovation Center in Philadelphia; 2) technical consultation with vendors, professors, interns and internal stakeholders; 3) research into emerging technologies and their potential application to the Digital Innovation Lab current and future projects. Projects will tend to focus on the creation of demos, pilots, and proofs of concept illustrating how specific emerging technologies can address current or future Hershey technical needs.


The Manager must be comfortable with all forms of digital technologies, interested in researching the latest advances in emerging technologies including those in AI, Machine Learning, Augmented and Virtual Reality, IOT, Blockchain and future technologies to come. An ability to contribute technically to a project including occasional programming, when necessary, is required. The Manager must be able to communicate Lab projects and her/his point of view (written & oral) in a clear and compelling manner across diverse groups including leaders and Lab visitors. The Manager must also be comfortable with managing Masters-candidate interns as the chief developers of project work products and maintaining Hershey’s presence and relationship with The University of Pennsylvania, Pennovation, and the Philadelphia technical community including technical startup companies.


This job requires a blend of strategic thinking, Hershey business acumen, technical flexibility, curiosity, and technical leadership. This role will extend Hershey’s technical horizon through the investigation of innovative and disruptive approaches for important long-term Hershey use cases.



Major Duties/Responsibilities:


Strategic Project Development and Execution

  • Work consultatively with key stakeholders, professors, interns, and vendors to deliver proofs of concept, pilots and demos of emerging technologies applied to forward-looking business-relevant use cases


Emerging Technologies Research

  • Investigate the newest advances in digital technologies, determine their applicability to Hershey, and educate peers and stakeholders on their potential


Pennovation, Professor, and Intern Management

  • Be the on-site Hershey representative to the Pennovation Center and interface with Professors, Interns, and other University of Pennsylvania resources to achieve project goals.



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Business Acumen: Demonstrates understanding of commercial, operational, financial and people aspects of Hershey’s businesses. Ability to analyze long-term business needs and identify innovative solutions that further the long-term goals of individual businesses.
  • Technical Proficiency: General comfort, understanding and experience programming in at least one modern programming language (e.g. C++, C#, python, java) along with a working-knowledge of current digital technologies including Cloud Systems, Cloud Computing, Mobile Technologies and others
  • Technical Education: Willing to independently research emerging technologies and methods related to advanced digital technologies, identify those relevant to Hershey’s long-term goals, and advocate their usage.
  • Creativity: Thinks holistically to identify innovative applications of emerging technologies to business use cases.
  • Relationship Building: Builds a community of respect and collaboration across the technical ecosystem in Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. 
  • Prioritization: Must have demonstrated experience managing multiple and sometimes conflicting or ambiguous priorities, extended work schedules, and short time constraints. 
  • Project Leadership: Comfort level in facilitating and leading projects that are forward looking, highly conceptual, and technically advanced.
  • Representational Presence: Must be proficient and comfortable at communicating the goals of the Digital Innovation Lab to the Philadelphia technical community.

  • Overnight Travel requirement of this position is less than 15%

  • BS/BA in a technical field, MS preferred; other degrees, especially in Liberal Arts, will be considered if candidate has relevant technical experience.



  • 6+ years professional experience with relevant background
  • Prior experience developing and leading projects
  • 4+ years’ experience in a modern programming language (C++, C#, java, python)
  • 3+ years’ experience in positions requiring management and delivering software solutions
  • Prior experience working in multiple modern technical platforms (Cloud-based solutions, Mobile apps, Desktop solutions)
