Job Description Summary

The Senior Accountant will assist the Assistant Controller and Controller in grant coordination and post-award accounting, tax return and compliances, and managing the daily operations of the general accounting functions of the University. The position works closely with the University’s department administrators as well as the Office of Sponsored Programs, Accounts Payable and Payroll staff to ensure financial transactions are properly initiated, recorded, and reconciled. In addition, the Senior Accountant will take a major responsibility in preparation of tax returns and schedules.

Essential Duties

  • Reconcile the post award accounting for grants including but not limited to billing, drawdowns, and financial reporting on federal grants.
  • Prepare tax return schedules for the Form 990, Form 990T, and state returns.
  • Responsible for overseeing the reconciliation of complex balance sheet accounts; examines transactions in these accounts to ensure completeness and accuracy, work with various departments to resolve reconciling items.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and administrators in preparation of Form 5500 and 403(b) audit.
  • Prepare schedules, footnotes, and related supporting documentation for the year-end audit.
  • Serve as a backup for accounting operational activities including daily banking, wire transfers and ACH transactions.
  • Work closely with the Staff Accountant and provide guidance and support where necessary.
  • Provide technical advice and problem resolution to Bentley community on varied accounting issues.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationship with financial aid, sponsored program, and other administrative offices.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  • 4-6 years' of accounting experience. Strong knowledge of and experience with general ledger monthly closing.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and competing priorities efficiently.
  • Must be highly detail-oriented with strong analytic, problem-solving, financial, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and/ or collaboratively in a team environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel skills (i.e. Pivot tables, Vlookup, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with students and employees of the University with tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
  • Commitment to excellence and to providing the highest level of customer service and responsiveness.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher education experience preferred
  • Experience in grant accounting preferred
  • Must be comfortable learning and using cloud-based complex financial system

Work Environment

  • Typical office setting with extensive sitting and computer work
  • Ability to travel around campus for meetings and other work related events
