We are Tech Shop, which is a part of the Academic and Research Technology (A&RT) organization here at SHSU. Academic and Research Technology provides a wide range of services to campus, such as providing technology for use on campus, assisting with technical issues and requests, and providing consultation and input to campus for when new technology is needed.

Tech Shop, being a part of A&RT, helps SHSU by configuring and deploying the computer hardware and software that is used by all of campus as well as by providing Tier 2 technical support for requests and issues. We are a team of full-time Technicians who are supported by our Student Workers in our mission to make sure SHSU is successful in providing a quality education experience for our students! We work closely with other areas within IT, such as our Service Desk, Audio/Video team, and our Asset Management team to help us accomplish our mission.

We are usually described as “The Face of IT” so we are looking for Student Workers who have the drive to deliver results while making sure our clients have a great experience when they work with us! We look forward to reviewing your application!

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Our Student Technicians work under the supervision of Tech Shop Technicians to provide Tier 2 Technical Support to campus. The Student Technician is responsible for:

  • Assisting with the configuration and installation of various types of computer systems and peripherals.
  • Troubleshooting hardware and software issues reported to us through our ticketing system.
  • Maintain accurate record of all work performed on tickets that may be assigned to the Student Technician.
  • Maintain active communication via phone and email with the client who placed the work order.
  • Assist with team-wide projects such as moving department computer equipment to a different location or helping replace computers in our academic computer labs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Requirements for the PositionOTHER REQUIREMENTS

The following are requirements a candidate MUST meet to be considered for this role:

  • Be able to work 15-28 hours per week.
  • Be a current SHSU student and be enrolled in a minimum of 6 Credit Hours.

While not a requirement, a good candidate for this position should strive to meet as many of the following qualifications as possible:

  • Have some experience working with computer hardware and peripherals.
  • Have some experience working with the Windows 10 operating system. Experience with MacOS/iOS is a plus.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and observe processes, policies, and rules.
  • Be able to responsibly balance their work and personal life.

  • Able to carry loads up to 50 pounds
