Legal Manager Position – Gabon and Congo Republic

Role Purpose

The Legal practitioner will be a member of the SLB Legal team of Angola, Central and East Africa. He or she will be required to collaborate with various departments within the company and to assist with legal and administrative work within the Legal Department.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the local and regional Contracts teams, Attorneys and Legal Counsel in various legal and contractual matters.
  • Analyze, review and draft various documents and effectively manage their archiving.
  • Provide legal assistance to various departments and business lines and collaborate with relevant colleagues and stakeholders, under the supervision and instruction of the regional Attorneys/Legal Counsel.

Job Description

  • Handle day-to-day contracts, legal and corporate matters.
  • Interact with GeoUnit support functions and departments.
  • Provide legal support to Operations to ensure compliance with local regulations and SLB Code of Ethics.
  • Assists Legal Counsel to implement procedures, practices, guidelines and templates.
  • Participate in department training and development initiatives and complete assigned training.
  • Manages and administers contract-related records in the relevant contracts database on a timely basis.
  • Must become familiar with and use all Legal Department systems and tools and assist with the maintenance of records in the Legal Knowledge Management System.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives.
  • Assists the Contracts Analysts, Contracts Manager, the Attorneys and Legal Counsel as required.

Technical / Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law. Qualified to practice law (BAR admission, advocate license or other equivalent).
  • 6-8 years of solid experience in a similar role.
  • Proficiency in English both written and oral.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of Oil and Gas laws and services.

Additional Requirements

  • Decisive and strategic with self-starting attitude. Candidate would be expected to work independently with minimum supervision while ensuring alignment with objectives of Legal/Contract Department and the Central Africa Business Unit.
  • Excellent command of English and French.
  • Efficient communicator, able to communicate purposefully and persuasively. Candidate would be the main point of contact for Legal/Contract Department in the region and therefore expected to: (i) perform the role of trusted advisor for the Country Manager; (ii) ensure timely and effective communication with Legal and Contract leadership, as well as other function leads, in GU HQ; (iii) manage collaborative working relationship with other function leads in the region; and (iv) be able to represent the company externally.
  • Good understanding of CEMAC’s regulatory framework specifically related to: (i) contract law; (ii) litigation procedure; (iii) corporate law; (iv) labor law; and (v) relevant banking/financing requirements.
  • Commercial minded while remain upholding high integrity and ethical standards. In action, you would be expected to provide actionable sound legal advice with the aim of protecting company’s commercial interests.
  • Understanding the way publicly listed Multinational Companies operates, preference shall be given to candidates with 3-4 experience working in MNC legal department or law firm serving MNC clients in commercial transactions.
