About the Role: As a paramedic at UPMC, you will:
- Maintain and replenish medical and communication equipment.
- Assess and prioritize medical procedures based on the nature and extent of illness or injury.
- Administer basic and advanced life support to patients in various settings.
- Communicate effectively with Medical Command personnel and other healthcare team members.
- Commit to high-quality, safe work practices and encourage patient and family involvement in safety processes.
- Perform emergency diagnostic and treatment procedures.
- Provide educational instruction to student paramedics and participate in community outreach programs.
- Reflect a positive attitude and provide exceptional care in high-stress environments.
- Demonstrates competency related to pharmacological interventions.
- Completes all official documentation on time, such as payroll, expense reports, orientation forms, etc.
- Demonstrates the ability to establish a rapport with customers; including the ability to create and sustain a positive relationship; regardless of circumstances, environment, or patient presentation.
- Responds promptly and efficiently to all requests for service.
- Maintains fitness for duty by adhering to all employee health requirements. Reports injuries and completes the appropriate documentation, no matter how minor, to a supervisor.
- Demonstrates skills, competencies, and judgment necessary to provide patient care in any environment; using educational resources that are required or made available.
- Ensures patient and family confidentiality and dignity at all times.
- Documents appropriate assessment, interventions, and other pertinent patient information in a timely manner. Collects and promptly processes demographic, medical necessity, and other necessary billing information.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain vehicles and equipment, ensuring readiness for emergencies.
- Administer life-saving treatments and follow protocols for patient care.
- Communicate patient information and receive instructions from Medical Command.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development.
- Provide public service programs and stand-by assignments at local events.
- Document patient conditions, treatments, and reactions accurately.
Requirements:
- A two-year work commitment is required with acceptance of the sign-on bonus.
- Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their education, experience, and certifications.

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 1 year of EMS pre-hospital experience at the advanced life support provider level is preferred.
- Must be able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull weight up to 100 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions required.
- Must be eligible to receive medical command authorization from the Medical Director, have reliable transportation, and be willing to travel to any base site as assigned.
- Successfully complete the prescribed orientation program, including classroom.
- Work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handling multiple/changing priorities, and specialized equipment.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Certified Paramedic in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania required. A valid Driver's License is required.
PA Dept of Health recognized Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or Emerg Vehicle Driver (EVD). PA-accredited PA Emergency Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) certification is required within 90 days of hire.
