Department Description:

The Department of Learning and Teaching's strong commitment to diversity is reflected in our full-time faculty, the PhD and Master’s program enrollment. Currently, 69% of our full-time faculty are faculty of color; 78% of students in the PhD program are students of color, 69% are women, and many are the first in their families to pursue higher education; and over 40% of students in the Master’s program are students of color. The Department includes a fully online PhD program in Education for Social Justice, both credential and master's degree programs in elementary education, secondary education, special education, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and a fully online Master's of education program for experienced K-12 teachers. Detailed Description:

The Department of Learning and Teaching at the University of San Diego seeks qualified applicants for a 9-month, full-time, tenure track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor to provide strategic and programmatic leadership to diversify our teacher workforce. The candidate will work in collaboration with department faculty, local community colleges and school districts to support upcoming initiatives and pathways in our credential and degree programs. We seek a dynamic and engaged teacher educator and scholar with demonstrated commitment to high-quality student-centered pedagogy and critical scholarship.

Responsibilities: Demands of the position require a commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, advising; close partnerships with local school districts; and well-developed teamwork and communication skills. In screening applicants, we will be looking for evidence of demonstrated commitment to addressing diversity, equity, and social justice issues in pre K-12 education; active engagement in scholarship, as reflected in professional presentations, publications and/or research grants. (Support for research activities and travel is available for faculty members.) Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to collaborating with faculty and field experience supervisors around program development, admissions, accreditation, and general departmental and university service.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in Education by July 1, 2023.
  • Demonstrated scholarly activities within an active research agenda.
  • Strong knowledge of current research, policy, and best practices in at least one of the following areas: Social/Cultural Foundations of Education, Early Childhood, Psychology, Bilingual Education, Multimodal Literacy/Reading or Action Research.
  • Strong commitment to social justice, diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion of all learners.
  • A minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in K-12 settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experiences in higher education and online teaching, including master’s and doctoral levels.
  • Expertise in more than one of the identified areas of specialization listed above.
  • Demonstrated experience in building relationships and collaborating with school districts.
  • Experience with residency and similar credentialing pathways to diversify the teacher workforce.

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
