Graphic Design Program
The College of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Program Head of the Graphic Design Program. The program seeks a visionary educator-practitioner to provide innovative and strategic leadership. The Program Head of the Graphic Design Program will work with faculty, allied program colleagues and students to build on the program’s many strengths while seeking new strategic opportunities rooted in contemporary and emerging practices. The Program Head of the Graphic Design Program reports to the Director of the Stuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and is a member of the leadership team of the School. S/he guides strategic and visionary direction for the program and oversees its operations. The position responsibilities also include teaching select graphic design courses. We seek a passionate, visionary and inspirational educator-practitioner to advance the Graphic Design Program, preserving its unique strengths while also supporting and advocating new directions in innovative curricula, outreach, and applied research/ creative scholarship and professional practice. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience leading an educational program or creative agency, have a record of involvement with contemporary and emerging practices in graphic design, be a strong manager with a proven record of administrative skills, including fiscal acumen, experience managing budgets and personnel; be able to direct and balance faculty and staff roles, demonstrating effective delegation with appropriate oversight; be a strategic thinker with proven success in developing, advancing and tracking short- and long-term plans; be a leader who understands how diversity benefits all members of the university community, and can effectively articulate those benefits; have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and be able to build consensus among program faculty, students and stakeholders regarding future directions and opportunities. Required is an appropriate advanced degree and professional experience/accomplishments commensurate with the rank of full professor with tenure or professor of practice in graphic design. The position is full time as a tenured, or multi-year contract Program Head, beginning August 2018. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, teaching experience, and current professional standing. Thanks to the School’s Stuckeman Endowments, the program is enriched by funding for facilities enhancements, lectures and exhibitions as well as opportunities for visiting professorships and faculty research grants.
