The Labour Relations Solutions Division is looking for enthusiastic, analytical and organized administrative professionals (Bilingual ( English/French)and English) to join our collaborative environment where you will bring your proven excellent critical thinking and time-management skills to validate and process applications and monitor and update records pursuant to various legislation while managing multiple assignments; and contribute to collaborating on future digital modernization initiatives.

About us:

The Strategic Initiatives Branch supports mediation and arbitration services providing administrative assistance by processing requests for the appointment of a conciliator/mediator, arbitrator and/or nominee in accordance with existing legislation and interprets and applies relevant labour legislation to ensure compliance with matters of jurisdiction, timeliness and Ministerial authority. The Branch also collects, analyses and distributes information on active collective bargaining relationships in Ontario. In addition to a labour relations/collective bargaining information database, an up-to-date collective agreements and arbitration decisions (awards) repository is maintained and made available to the public.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this position, you will:

  • Accurately validate and process requests for the appointment of a conciliator or mediator, arbitrator, and/or nominee in accordance with existing legislation;
  • Interpret and apply relevant labour legislation to ensure compliance with matters of jurisdiction, timeliness, and Ministerial authority in the provision of conciliation, mediation, and arbitration services, ensuring full compliance;
  • Monitor and collect data on the status of collective agreement negotiations in Ontario by creating, maintaining, and updating information online in the case management database
  • Establish and foster collaborative relationships providing clerical services to a diverse group of labour relations clients and stakeholders

How do I qualify?

Mandatory (bilingual position only)

  • You must possess oral and written French language skills at the advanced level. Your proficiency level will be confirmed before hire.

Collective Bargaining Knowledge:

You have:

  • Knowledge of compensation and benefits (including base wage classifications for different industries wage increase rates/lump sum/special adjustment types/ benefits, etc.);
  • Knowledge of labour relations terminology by interpreting and applying relevant labour legislation to ensure compliance with matters of jurisdiction, timeliness and Ministerial authority in the provision of the program services, ensuring full compliance;
  • Knowledge and understanding of appropriate sections of the Ontario Labour Relations Act, 1995;
  • ability to interpret and apply various labour legislation such as Labour Relations Act, 1995, Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act, etc.;
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining/dispute resolution processes, principles, practices and terminology used in collective bargaining;
  • Knowledge of Ministry of Labour guidelines and requirements relating to protection of confidential information and related OPS standards to maintain confidentiality of bargaining process

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • You can tactically communicate with multiple stakeholders (employers/unions/management officials/the public) using diplomacy and discretion;
  • You are capable of building and maintaining strong collaborative relationships with collective bargaining parties in all industries in Ontario;
  • You can work independently or as part of a team;
  • You can handle client enquiries in order to contribute to a harmonious labour relations environment in Ontario while respecting branch confidentiality procedures

Analytical, Research and Problem-Solving Skills:

  • You can identify inconsistencies, discrepancies, irregularities and use comprehensive knowledge of policies and procedures to make the appropriate inquiries and resolve issues;
  • You can extract and interpret settlement information from collective agreements in all industries

Organizational and Time Management Skills:

  • you can maintain records with accuracy and keep up-to-date records to ensure the maximum value of the collective bargaining information system;
  • you have the ability to generate, organize and format basic reports based on existing data;
  • you have strong time management and self-motivation skills to effectively manage multi-assignments with various timelines;
  • you can work under pressure with competing legislative deadlines and perform work with limited supervision

Computer Skills:

  • You are proficient with Microsoft Office: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, SQL, SAS
