About the role:

The Jain Lab (https://ishajainlab.com/) at the University of California, San Francisco is looking for a Research Associate. A minimum two-year commitment is required. The scientific goal is to study oxygen metabolism and develop hypoxia/hyperoxia as a therapy for age-associated disorders. This position will require a combination of wet lab molecular biology/biochemistry experiments, as well as animal work. SRA will be expected to perform a range of experimental techniques (cloning, western blots, protein biochemistry, tissue culture, microscopy, etc.) as well as animal husbandry (maintaining mouse colonies, designing breeding schemes, keeping daily record of body weights/survival/activity, behavioral studies, basic dissections, etc.). Applicant should be able to perform basic quantitative tasks (e.g., dilutions, molarity calculations, manipulating excel files, database management, etc.). Specialist will also be responsible for lab administrative responsibilities, such as maintaining and organizing lab inventory and interacting with buyers/sales reps. Technician will work closely with the principal investigator, potentially resulting in first-author publications and conference presentations.

What you will do:

  • Lab management (ordering, lab inventory, IACUC/BUA protocol, misc. tasks)
  • Animal husbandry (breeding, tagging, genotyping, keep track of cages/crosses, etc.)
  • Basic animal work (weights, behavior tests, temperature, blood draw, basic dissections)
  • Cell culture work (passaging cells, doing growth curves)
  • Molecular biology work (transfection, infection, flow cytometry, westerns, etc.)
  • Advanced animal work (surgeries, stereotaxic injections, blood pressure, plethysmograph, etc.)

What you will need:

  • AA/AS degree plus 2-4 years hands on experience required
  • BS/BA (preferred) in a related field
  • At least two years of previous hands-on work with animals (either post-college or during undergraduate training)
  • At least two years molecular biology experience (either post-college or during undergraduate training)
  • Undergraduate degree in biology/chemistry
  • Extremely organized, able to work well with excel and new software
  • Willingness to learn new methodologies
  • Some flexibility with schedule (e.g., checking on animals on weekend, etc.)

What we prefer:

  • Experience taking on independent projects to completion
  • Experience with genomics tools and 1-2 years of statistics/computer science

Hiring Range:

RA I $27hr -$31.11hr

RA II $68,640 - $80,576.87
