Description The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS), is recruiting an Interpretation and Graphic Design Intern to join our AmeriCorps program to assist the interpretive division and provide interpretive services to visitors at Capitol Reef National Park. A major focus of this internship is to provide services for non-English speaking park visitors—both in-person and through creation of foreign language translations of park brochures. The intern should have conversational ability (or greater) in at least one of the following languages: French, German, or Italian. The intern will be responsible for leading a foreign language translation project, including design/layout and production of brochures, site bulletins, and other publications. Most of the text translations will be provided by a 3rd party; the intern will use these to create brochures and other publications in multiple languages, in line with NPS graphic identity standards and guidelines. Intern will be responsible for planning work, executing layout and design, and producing multiple products for publication. Materials will be made for use on the park website as well.

The intern will research, develop, and present formal interpretive programs for a variety of audiences at the park visitor center, cultural sites, and at the park amphitheater. The Intern may also research, develop and present original programs. Programs will include talks and illustrated programs and may include walks. Topics include geology, archaeology, history, ecology and astronomy. The intern will write program outlines and may use existing outlines for ideas. Informal interpretation will consist of staffing the visitor center and roving park trails, and providing accurate information to park visitors about safety, regulations, park and area features, resources, facilities, and recreational and educational opportunities.

This work requires desktop publishing and design skills--specifically expertise in Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) and Microsoft products, the capacity to learn information quickly, strong visitor service skills, strong communication skills, and teamwork. People who enjoy working with the public, who have motivated and creative personalities, and who can work independently to meet deadlines will be excellent candidates for this position. Orientation and training will be provided by Great Basin Institute and Capital Reef National Park. The Interpretation & Graphic Design Intern will gain first-hand experience in producing publications, including design development and product evaluation; learn appropriate methods for assessing visitors’ needs and providing superior customer service; and gain experience in public speaking.

Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree – or coursework and relevant experience – in Environmental Education or field related to the position description; • Experience developing and presenting interpretive programs for a diverse audience; • Language skills—conversational ability in French, German, and/or Italian; • Comfortable interacting with the public and public speaking; • Familiarity with the cultural and natural resources of the Colorado Plateau or Four-Corners Region strongly preferred; • Desktop publishing skills and basic computer and presentation software: proficiency in Adobe Creative Suites and Microsoft Office products; • Graphic design (layout and design) skills; • Willingness to work as part of a team and independently to accomplish the goals and mission of NPS and GBI; • Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or the equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) and federal criminal background checks, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement.
