As a 355U Artist-in-Residence, you will work with students at Ruth Asawa School of the Arts (RASOTA) and be part of the instructional team for students preparing for careers in architecture, instrumental music, vocal music, dance, theater, writing, visual arts, and media and film. You will help to lead RASOTA’s transformational work to deliver on the promises outlined in both Transform Learning. Transform Lives. as well as our long-term, city-wide North Star, Vision 2025. We want someone who will provide real world experience to elevate the education we provide to students, better preparing them for careers in the arts.

We expect our Artist in Residence to: 

  • Provides technical support to lead certificated teacher in specific areas of expertise/discipline in accordance with California Visual and Performing Arts content standards
  • Supports instruction to secondary students in specific area of expertise under the direction of lead certificated classroom teacher on an as-needed basis
  • Facilitate a learning environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for and development of skills to engage students seeking to deepen their knowledge within specific disciplines
  • Direct, support and/or assist student theatrical, visual arts and musical presentations
  • Work collaboratively with instructional team of certificated classroom teachers and other artists in residence 
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key members/leaders within artistic circles to provide cutting edge student instruction within specific areas of expertise
  • Have knowledge of the target instrument, craft or other specific field or discipline at a professional or expert level; the local and national arts landscape
  • Have ability and skill to any instrument, equipment or other tool necessary to demonstrate mastery and provide training to others; provide training to others within the specific target discipline

This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) appointment type.

This is an as-needed position working less than 20 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of experience training others within a specific discipline

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong ties with local or national artists in the same discipline of instruction
  • Solid reputation for excellence within artistic circles
  • Proven record of successful student instruction at the secondary level within specific discipline

What We Offer

SFUSD offers a starting hourly rate of $41.20. All positions are as-needed. Daily hours of work range from 3 to 7 hours dare based on student enrollment within specific disciplines. The number of days Artists-in-Residence participate in the program depend on student enrollment within specific discipline.
