Biomedical Data Science Associate

Brown University Computing and Information Services seeks qualified applicants to join our Data Science Practice in the position of Biomedical Data Science Associate. The Biomedical Data Science Associate’s principal efforts will be focused on the development of programs and web applications for managing, analyzing, and visualizing biomedical and healthcare datasets, which may be defined by work supported by extramural grants and contracts.

The Biomedical Data Science Associate will primarily support projects at the Brown Center for Biomedical Informatics (BCBI), but will have opportunities to explore other projects supported by the Data Science Practice. The Biomedical Data Science Associate will be an active participant in exploring creative new approaches for leveraging heterogeneous data to support biomedical research, healthcare, and policy initiatives in alignment with the vision of BCBI.

This is a three-year, fixed-term staff position, based in the Data Science Practice, CIS, Brown University, with the possibility of extension contingent upon available funding. 

The grade level of the position will be determined based on the qualifications of the chosen candidate.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Required:Bachelor’s degree
  • Preferred:Advanced degree

Experience

For grade 9E - 1 year of experience in a quantitative, computational, or software development field.

For grade 10E 2 -3 years experience in a quantitative, computational, or software development field.

Job Competencies

  • Working knowledge with most of the following: Linux operating system, programming languages (e.g., Java, Ruby, R, or Julia), databases (e.g., MySQL or Oracle), Web languages and technologies (e.g., Ruby on Rails or D3), high-performance and distributed computing, and algorithm design and evaluation.
  • Familiarity with several of the following areas: statistics; machine learning; high-performance and distributed computing; data mining, exploration and visualization; data management; algorithm design; software engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines, and an eagerness to take ownership of challenging and open-ended assignments.
  • Effective at communicating with audiences whose technical backgrounds vary widely.
  • Expertise in several of the following areas: statistics; machine learning; high-performance and distributed computing; data mining, exploration and visualization; data management; algorithm design; software engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines, and an eagerness to take ownership of challenging and open-ended assignments.
