Facilities Development and Management seek an Energy Management Specialist Lead to perform work of a complex nature and lead the work of and assign Energy Management personnel in the repairs, operations and programming of building automation systems.

Essential Duties

  • Operate and program building automation systems.
  • Utilize the campus' Energy Information System to diagnose and troubleshoot building’s inefficiencies and make recommendations for repairs.
  • Assign and inspect the work of Energy Management Specialists, Trades and vendors.
  • Inspect work in progress to insure it is completed within allotted time limits and for acceptable quality standards.
  • Determine material and labor estimates.
  • Train and instruct employees in new methods or procedures and remains alert for opportunities to effectively decrease costs.
  • Perform all building automation maintenance on all Controls systems whether Direct Digital Control (DDC) or Pneumatic systems from the Front End or onsite to and including the end device controlled.
  • Perform database uploads and downloads to maintain field and Front End controller with most current programs and upgrades.
  • Operate and monitor computer control system equipment.
  • Detect source and nature of system problems (Fault Detection Diagnostics Systems).
  • Make adjustments to change operating parameters of the system(s) due to emergencies, malfunctions and changes requirements or to optimize operations.
  • Perform emergency corrections to neutralize alarm conditions and restore proper operation.
  • Verify correct system and control sequence operations.
  • May perform scheduled and unscheduled remote start and stop of equipment.
  • Update air handlers/Equipment schedules upon request for air conditioning services.
  • Import and audit data from a variety of computer systems and compiles energy management reports.
  • Perform Control System Upgrades.
  • Study plans, drawings, specifications, and work order requirements.
  • Conduct energy auditing and provides reports by accumulating data from multiple automation systems and/or software support programs.
  • May develop macros and queries to produce energy management reports.
  • Evaluate HVAC systems and implements changes to conserve energy.
  • Review, modify, and implement programming changes to building automation system to ensure efficient and effective system operations and conformance with standards and guidelines.
  • Monitor and adjust process loops for optimum performance.
  • Develop operator qualifications, training and responsibility parameters for continual operation.
  • Train appropriate staff.
  • Calibrate, repair, and replace building automation system sensing devises to specifications.
  • May dispatch trouble calls to appropriate personnel to respond to customer needs.
  • Troubleshoots power supplies, controllers, and transducers.
  • Perform backup and restoration of critical system files and maintains archives.
  • Attend meetings on behalf of supervisor as needed.
  • Utilize computer to operate plant and building automation systems.
  • Ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

Seven years experience in energy management engineering or with building automation systems OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Some positions may require Chloroflourocarbons Certification upon employment. Employee must possess a valid US Drivers license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.

Evidence of

  • Graduating from an accredited/certified trade school such as Building Automation Controls, HVAC training program or Electrical training program.
  • Effective communication skills.

Experience in:

  • Automation systems and process controls.
  • Network administration and server support.
  • Programming of building automation systems and equipment (e.g. JCI Metasys, Siemens Controls Systems, Aircuity, and/or Phoenix Laboratory Controls but not limited to other third party systems).
  • Process control calibration.
  • Control valve replacement and sizing.
  • Mechanical systems operation and diagnostics.
  • Electrical systems operation and diagnostics.
  • Electrical Systems Safe Work Practices up to and including 480 volt 3 Phase systems.
  • Air side ventilation systems operation and diagnostics.
  • Process systems operation and diagnostics.
  • Refrigerant side systems operation and diagnostic.
  • Use of customer service skills, which are critical to the organization.
  • Administrative maintenance time management.

Working Environment

  • Work in extreme and varying temperatures, restricted movements, confined spaces (tunnels, manholes, vaults), and intense noise.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 45 pounds is required.
  • Work off ladders to download/upload field controls and relocate/install thermostats.
  • Utilize hand tools (wire strippers, screw drivers, pliers, wrenches, volt amp meter, temperature/humidity calibrator) and power tools (drill).
  • Wear personal protective equipment (e.g. safety glasses, face shield, gloves).
  • Drive University vehicle and/or cart to job site.

This position is located at the Central Plant on Tempe Main campus.

Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment. Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39 month period from date of hire.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination post offer of employment to include audiogram, asbestos worker clearance, respiratory clearance questionnaire and respiratory fit test.

This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.

This position requires working a rotating on-call/stand-by schedule and may be called in for emergency response including nights, weekends, and holidays.

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than state appropriations. As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.
